Magandang magandang magandang umaga po sa inyong lahaaaat!
Okey, that’s all the Filipino I got for this piece. Welcome–and yes, I’m back.
The prompt I have today is: summer. Particularly summer vacays.
Two decades of our life we’ve been gifted with such a thing as a summer vacay. Three and a half scorching hot months where days are our own and possibilities of fun-dumb stuff to do are ENDLESS. Or at least, that’s what I think most of my classmates did. Laze around, hang out with friends, eat chips til sunrise, call it a night when the morning birds start chirping, etc. Can you confirm?
Personally, my experience of summer has been quite, erm, different. I remember saying to myself, “any season is better than gosh darn summer!!!!!”. The fury behind this statement wasn’t because of the heat or the boredom or that I had no friends to hang out with (HAH), it was mostly because I dreaded going to swim training and the intense tiredness that followed it.
Twice a day, 6x a week. In a pool filled with toddler pee and human sweat. Workouts that made me feel like coach wanted to kill me. Wake up at 5 am. Swim. Eat. Nap. Jog. Swim. Eat. Sleep at 9 pm. Not sure if i’m considered lucky or unlucky for not passing out.
My summer schedule does resemble a prison routine if you ask me. And not the routine of a petty theft, i’m talking Chief-of-Crime level here.
Summer was the bane of my existence. And the worst part is? I never even gained abs or what. All I got were goggle marks that made me look like a frog.
Not. Cool.
So I’ve always been curious, how do normal kids people celebrate summer. Did they live the High School Musical 2 paradise? Did they lounge by the pool like Sharpay? With her iced tea from England, towels from Turkey, and turkey from Mai-ai-aine?
All that said though, I’m not mad I had to endure more than a decade of swim-summers. Maybe a little traumatized, but hey–I have beautiful broad shoulders and they make up for it.
Some things never change.
Xx,
Juliana
